Our History
Sweetfield Manor was not always the romantic, luxury hotel you see today. It was originally a plantation house harking back to the days when sugar production was a large part of Barbadian life. The original building was renovated to accommodate vacationing guests and subsequent improvements have transformed it into the charming boutique hotel we are proud to have today.
It was built in the early 1900s by the Danish Virgin Islander, Waldemar Hansche ll, founder of the shipping business known as Hanschelllnniss. The Danes were not widely known as colonists, but during the first half of the 17th Century they established small tropical colonies in Asia and on the west coast of Africa and subsequently turned to the West lndies. Mr Hanschell married Miss Amy Manning and also built Rudkip, the house next door to Sweetfield Manor, for his brother, and the mirrored image of Sweetfield Manor.
More recently Sweetfield Manor was owned by Judge and Mrs Blackman and was known as ‘Beau Lieu’ (Beautiful Place). lt was sold by Judge and Mrs Blackman in 2002 and underwent renovations to transform it into what is now called Sweetfield Manor Historic Bed and Breakfast. lt has been visited by dignitaries and guests from all over the world as part of The Barbados National Trust Open House Tour in both 2005 and again in January 2009.

Award Winning Accommodation
TripAdvisor gives a Certificate of Excellence to accommodation, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers. Sweetfield Manor has obtained this prestigious award in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

BedandBreakfast.com awards are given out both annually and monthly. Annual awards encompass the best overall inns of the year for the US, Canada, and other international destinations. Monthly awards cover incredible inns that fall into niche categories, such as our luxury boutique hotel. Winners are not ranked, but are listed alphabetically within each category. Sweetfield Manor won this prestigious monthly award in both 2008 and 2010.
Established in 2002, the Travellers’ Choice awards are the highest honor TripAdvisor can bestow. These annual awards are the only travel industry awards based on millions of reviews and opinions from travellers around the world. They reflect “the best of the best” for service, quality, and customer satisfaction. The award is given according to category, from hotels and accommodations to destinations, attractions, brands, and products. Our luxury hotel won this award in 2012.
Experts’ Choice is an entirely new kind of award. It is based on reviews written by professionals for major travel guides, magazines, newspapers, and other respected publications. These reviews provide a snapshot of what the experts think are the best places to stay, eat, and visit. Experts’ Choice Awards recognize businesses that have outperformed their peers, as reflected in reviews from 70+ source publications. In general, winners have received a TripExpert Score in the top 30% of comparable venues.
The TripExpert Scores are calculated using expert reviews from 70+ publications including travel guides, magazines and newspapers such as Fodor’s, Michelin, etc. They take into account the number of publications that have reviewed a specific venue, as well as any score or rating that has been awarded. The TripExpert Score is the authoritative statement of overall quality.
Awarded “Best in the Caribbean” by Islands Magazine, our boutique hotel was described as “Above and Beyond: Rare Finds – Barbados”.
